In this 4 part series, Aaronica aka Needle and the Belle will teach you how to sew stretch fabric and you'll make an activewear set! If you're a bit intimidated to sew stretchy fabrics but want to, and you’d love to learn to use a serger, this series is a great way to dive into knits. The series will begin by learning about various types of stretch material, understanding things like stretch percentage, recovery and how to choose knit fabric for your projects. Then in the second session you'll trace your pattern and cut out your fabric. In the last two sessions, you'll make the activewear top and leggings. Classes are Tues July 16th 6-8pm and Tues and Thurs July 18th, 23rd and 25th 6-9pm.

Skills you will learn:

  • Concepts of sewing with stretch fabrics such as understanding stretch percentage, weight and recovery
  • How to pin and cut knit fabric
  • Tips for sewing stretch fabrics
  • Needles and stitches for knits
  • How to sew a garment on a serger

Skills expected:

You've used a sewing machine before and have sewn a few simple projects and understand some garment pattern concepts. You've taken either our Essential Shirt class or have made a beginner garment before.

Materials needed: You'll need light to medium-heavy weight stretch fabric with 50% stretch. See the size chart to determine how much yardage you need.

Birch organic overlock knit is one good option (which Sew Liberated used in their colorblocked example on their site) Another option they recommend for solids is Tencel Jersey knit.

Mood fabrics also has a lot of stretch fabrics that would be good for this set.
