In this intro to improv and hand quilting class, you'll create a small quilt (36”x36”) that can be used as a baby blanket, playmat, or small picnic blanket. This is a great project for anyone who has some beginner machine sewing skills who wants to learn to quilt! You'll learn to cut fabrics for your quilt, learn to back the piece, bind it and hand quilt it. This class is 3 sessions with a two week break in between to allow time for some homework.

Class Breakdown:

Class 1 (3 hours):

-Play with fabric colors and patterns to create a design

-Cut fabric out as you desire for the design

-Start sewing pieces together

Class 2 (3 hours):

-Ideally finish sewing the quilt top

-Lay out backing/batting/top

-Pin basting

-Go over threads, quilt designs, stitching, and how to use a hoop if using

Third class (2 weeks later) 3 hours:

-Learn how to make binding

-Sew on the binding

-Finish the binding

Skills you will learn

  • How to cut fabrics for quilting
  • How to design and assemble improv quilt top
  • How to back your quilt top
  • How to make and sew on binding
  • How to hand sew / hand quilt your piece

Skills expected: Beginner sewing skills (we don't go over how to sew start to finish in this class. If you've made a few simple projects on a sewing machine, you're good to go.)

You will supply your own fabric: This is a great scrap busting project! You can bring as much fabric as you want. Keep in mind bigger pieces will be faster to sew. 1 1/4-1/2 yards for the backing, 1/2-3/4 yard for binding. We will have extra scraps that can be used as needed/desired.

Materials provided: A sewing machine, choice of threads, needles, fabric shears, pins, marking tools, rotary cutter, rulers.

Max number of people for class: 6
