Do you have a stack of old t-shirts filled with memories? Turn them into a one-of-a-kind quilted keepsake! In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn the essential skills and techniques to transform t-shirt remnants into a quilted throw, wall hanging, or pillow.

This is an Advanced Beginner class, which means we don't teach how to sew in this class, though you will get an overview of our machines. If you don't know how to sew yet, take one of our beginner sewing classes! You should have beginner sewing experience as well as a sewing machine at home because you will have some sewing homework.

What to Bring:

  • At least 12 t-shirts (enough for a 24” x 24” pillow or wall hanging)
  • If making a throw/lap quilt, plan to use 20-40 t-shirts, depending on how large each piece is cut.
  • For the backing you'll need approximately 48" x 60" fabric but you don't need this during the first class and you can talk to Jeanine, your instructor, about it.

Class Breakdown:

Class 1 (3 hours):

  • Determine how large to cut each t-shirt and prep fabric
  • Apply iron-on interfacing for stability
  • Arrange colors and sizes for a balanced design
  • Begin sewing prepared pieces together
  • Plan how you’ll back your project

Homework:

  • Cut and prep the remaining t-shirts, including backing pieces
  • Purchase additional backing fabric if needed
  • Plan the final quilt layout

Class 2 (3 hours):

  • Continue preparing the pieces if needed
  • Sew all pieces together

Class 3 (3 hours):

  • Attach the backing
  • Begin tie quilting with embroidery floss for a finished look

By the end of the workshop, you’ll have a personal repurposed t-shirt quilt and the skills to create more on your own.

Skills you will learn

  • How to cut stretch fabrics for quilting
  • How to design and assemble quit blocks
  • How to back your quilt top
  • How to make and sew on binding
  • How to tie quilt with embroidery floss

Skills expected: Beginner sewing skills (we don't go over how to sew start to finish in this class. If you've made a few beginner projects on a sewing machine, you're good to go.)

Materials: You'll need to have and bring your own t-shirts as well as your own backing fabric (you can use t-shirt fabric for this as well.)

Materials provided: A sewing machine, choice of threads, needles, fabric shears, pins, marking tools, rotary cutter, rulers, emboridery floss and batting.

Max number of people for class: 6
