Advanced Beginner Cardigan

It's time to get cozy for fall! In this advanced beginner class, you'll be making the Marlo Sweater by True Bias — an oversized, relaxed cardigan with a dropped shoulder, deep V-neck, wide bands, and statement buttons.

This is a great class if you’ve sewn a few simple projects and are ready to try a garment with knit fabric, buttonholes, and sweater-style construction. The Marlo has a comfy, easy-to-wear shape and is a really satisfying project for building your garment sewing confidence.

The pattern includes two length options and optional patch pockets, so you can choose the version that works best for your style and fabric.

Skills You'll Learn:

How to sew with sweater knits or stable knits

How to work with a garment sewing pattern

How to choose your size and cut fabric

How to sew a cardigan from start to finish

How to sew bands and finish edges

How to sew buttonholes and attach buttons

How to sew optional patch pockets

Tips for sewing knits at home on a regular sewing machine

Who It’s For

Advanced beginner sewists who already know how to use a sewing machine and have some experience sewing from a beginner garment sewing pattern.

You should feel comfortable threading and using a sewing machine independently, sewing basic seams, and following instructions. You will not be taught how to sew from scratch in this class, so please be sure you have basic sewing experience.

Materials

Provided: Sewing pattern, sewing machines, sergers, coordinating thread, fabric shears, pins/clips, marking tools, measuring tape, irons, and instructor guidance throughout class.

Needed: Your own fabric, buttons, and any required notions. Please bring your fabric to the first class, pre-washed if your fabric calls for washing. We will attach the yardage chart so you know how much fabric to bring for your size and chosen view.
See the size charts for yardage. (the size chart that has ivory color in it is the Wardrobe By Me Men's cardigan size chart; the other two are for the Marlo Women's pattern cardigan size chart.) If you have any questions, reach out to classes@topstitchtl.com

Suggested fabrics: sweater knits, French terry, sweatshirt fleece, rib knits, boucle, or other medium-weight knit fabrics. The pattern can also work with some stable non-stretch fabrics, depending on the look you want.
