Madrone Pants – Three-Part Intermediate Series

Ready to make a pair of comfy, everyday pants with really cool details? In this intermediate class, we’ll be making the Madrone Pants by Sew Liberated, a relaxed barrel-leg pant with an easy elastic waist and drawstring detail.

This is a great class if you’ve sewn a few garments and are ready to build your pants-making skills.

Even though this pattern is designed for confident beginners, we’re listing this as an intermediate class because it has a lot more details than a more standard easy / beginner pants pattern, with creative possiblities for pattern play, colorblocking and contrast stitching details.

Skills You'll Learn:

How to sew and construct pants

How to sew pockets

How to sew an elastic waistband

How to sew a drawstring detail

How to sew and finish pant hems

Basic pants fitting and construction tips

Who It’s For

Advanced beginner sewists who already know how to use a sewing machine and have some garment sewing experience and have previously made a beginner pants pattern of some sort.

You should feel comfortable threading and using a sewing machine independently, sewing basic seams, following pattern instructions, and pressing as you sew. You will not be taught how to sew from scratch in this class, so please be sure you have basic sewing experience and have sewn at least a few simple projects or garments before this class.

Materials

Provided: Sewing pattern, sewing machines, sergers, coordinating thread, fabric shears, pins/clips, marking tools, measuring tape, irons, and instructor guidance throughout class.

Needed: Your own fabric. Please bring your fabric to the first class, pre-washed if your fabric calls for washing. We will attach the yardage chart so you know how much fabric to bring for your size.

(We wil supply the elastic and drawstring.)

See the size chart attached for yardage.

We recommend a medium-weight woven fabric that has no stretch. The drape or hand of the fabric will impact the look of the final garment — softer fabrics will fall more gently, and more stable fabrics will emphasize the leg shaping. Some wonderful choices are sandwashed linen or cotton, light canvas, light twill (like Ventana twill), or Essex cotton-linen blend.
