Your First Quilt – Three-Part Advanced Beginner Series

Ready to make your very first quilt? In this three-part advanced beginner class, you'll learn the basics of quilting from start to finish while making your own beautiful checkerboard-style lap quilt!

We'll be using a fun strip-piecing technique called "Around the World" to create a classic checkerboard design. This is a great first quilting project because you'll learn the foundational skills of quilting without having to cut and sew hundreds of individual squares.

We'll teach you how to make a 48" x 64" lap quilt using 4" squares, but you can customize your quilt by choosing different square sizes or adjusting the overall dimensions. Smaller quilts and larger squares are quicker to sew, while larger quilts or smaller squares will take more time.

Over three sessions, we'll work through the entire quilting process together — from cutting and piecing your quilt top to layering, quilting, and binding. You'll leave with new skills, more confidence, and a handmade quilt to be proud of!

Skills You'll Learn

  • How to choose and prepare fabrics for quilting

  • How to use a rotary cutter, ruler, and cutting mat

  • How to cut and sew accurate strips and squares

  • How to use the "Around the World" strip-piecing technique

  • How to sew consistent ¼" seam allowances

  • How to piece and press a quilt top

  • How to layer and baste a quilt sandwich

  • How to quilt the layers together using a sewing machine

  • How to finish a quilt with wraparound binding and square corners

  • Tips for planning future quilting projects

Who It’s For

Advanced beginner sewists who already know how to use a sewing machine and are ready to try quilting.

No quilting experience is necessary! You should feel comfortable threading a sewing machine, winding a bobbin, sewing straight seams with an accurate seam allowance, and using basic cutting, pressing, and pinning techniques.

You will not be taught how to sew from scratch in this class, so please be sure you have basic sewing experience before registering.

Class Breakdown

Week 1: Quilt Planning + Strip Piecing

We'll introduce the basics of quilting, discuss fabric selection, quilt sizing, and layout, and learn how to cut fabric accurately using rotary cutters and quilting rulers. Then we'll begin creating our checkerboard design using the "Around the World" strip-piecing technique.

Week 2: Quilt Top Assembly + Basting

We'll continue piecing and assembling our quilt tops, practicing accurate seams, alignment, and pressing techniques. We'll then learn how to layer the quilt top, batting, and backing to create a quilt sandwich, and explore different methods for basting the layers together.

Week 3: Quilting + Binding

We'll learn how to quilt the layers together using a sewing machine and finish our quilts with a simple wraparound binding and square corners. We'll also discuss other quilting and binding techniques you can try on future projects.

By the end of the series, you'll understand the entire quilt-making process and have the skills and confidence to make more quilts at home. Whether you finish every stitch during class or put on the final touches afterward, you'll be well on your way to becoming a quilter!
