Beginner – Learn to Sew for Baby! (3-Week Series)

Ready to learn how to sew and make something sweet, useful, and giftable? In this beginner-friendly three-part series, students will learn sewing machine basics while making handmade baby items: burp cloths, bibs, booties, and baby leggings.

This class is perfect for brand-new sewists, parents, grandparents, aunties, friends, or anyone who wants to learn to sew through small, practical projects. Each project is approachable, useful, and a great way to build confidence at the sewing machine.

You are welcome to bring your baby! This class is best suited for non-crawling babies who can hang out in a stroller, carrier, or car seat nearby while you sew.

Over three sessions, you’ll learn how to use a sewing machine, sew simple curves and straight seams, work with soft baby-friendly fabrics, and create a small handmade baby set. These projects are also wonderful for baby gifts, shower gifts, and using small pieces of fabric in a thoughtful way.

Class Breakdown

Week 1: Sewing Machine Basics + Burp Cloths and starting on Baby Bibs
We’ll start with sewing machine basics and learn how to sew straight seams, turn a project right side out, press, and topstitch. Students will make soft, useful burp cloths while getting comfortable at the machine and we'll move on to cutting out bib patterns and fabrics.

Week 2: Baby Bibs + Booties
We’ll build on the skills from Week 1 and make baby bibs and simple baby booties. Students will practice sewing curves, clipping curves, turning small projects, topstitching, and working carefully with small pieces.

Week 3: Baby Leggings + Finishing
We’ll finish the series by making a pair of simple baby leggings. Students will learn the basics of sewing with knit fabric, constructing tiny pants, adding an elastic waistband, and hemming.

By the end of the series, students will leave with a handmade collection of baby items and the confidence to keep sewing more small projects at home.
