Market Bag – Three-Part Intermediate Series

Ready to make a beautiful, sturdy bag you’ll use all the time? In this intermediate class, we’ll be making the Market Bag by B-Patterns, a roomy, structured tote designed for shopping, errands, travel, or carrying all the things from one place to another.

This is a great class if you’ve made a few sewing projects and are ready to build your bag-making skills. The Market Bag has a flat bottom and side panels, giving it a more dimensional, structured shape than a simple tote bag. You’ll learn how to work through a more detailed bag construction process while making something practical, stylish, and totally customizable with your fabric choices.

Skills You'll Learn:

How to sew a structured bag with a bottom and side panels

How to work from a bag sewing pattern

How to cut and prep bag pieces accurately

How to sew dimensional bag construction

How to sew straps and handle details

How to sew clean seams and finishing details

Tips for working with heavier-weight fabrics

Who It’s For

Advanced beginner sewists who already know how to use a sewing machine and are ready for a skill-building bag project.

You should feel comfortable threading and using a sewing machine independently, sewing basic seams, following instructions, and working through a multi-step project. You will not be taught how to sew from scratch in this class, so please be sure you have basic sewing experience and have sewn a few simple projects or beginner bags.

Materials

Provided: Sewing pattern, sewing machines, coordinating thread, fabric shears, pins/clips, marking tools, measuring tape, irons, and instructor guidance throughout the series.

Needed: Your own fabric, webbing (straps) and notions, unless you purchase materials from us. Please bring your fabric to the first class, pre-washed if your fabric calls for washing. We will attach the yardage chart and supply list so you know how much fabric to bring. We will have a small selection of choices that you can purchase here and receive in the first class (you can pick out the options in the first class.)

If you don't get supplies from us, you will need:

  • 55" (1½" wide) cotton or nylon webbing for the handles
  • 16" zipper (with 2 zipper pulls / sliders)
  • 8½" elastic, ⅜"–¾" wide
  • 1 small swivel hook (carabiner) for attaching keys
  • 8" coordinating twill tape, ribbon, or narrow webbing for the key holder

Suggested fabrics: canvas, cotton twill, denim, waxed canvas, upholstery-weight cotton, sturdy linen/cotton blends, or other medium- to heavyweight woven fabrics suitable for bags.

If you don't get fabrics from us, you will need:

  • 24" exterior fabric - at least 57" wide
  • 28" lining fabric - at least 55" wide
